Amazing Gift Idea for Tween Girls

For many years I installed picture walls/gallery walls for local clients however, my clients rarely prioritized decorating their kids rooms. Whenever I had conversations with my clients about what their plans were for their kids rooms, they never had any! Which it totally fine, to each their own, no judgement here, but kids rooms, especially tween and teen rooms is where my heart is at.

My number one gift idea for Tween girls is a room makeover!

Art Wall for Tween Girl Rooms

Each room needs a main focal point and I believe an art wall is the perfect feature for every kid. They are so versatile as kids age and their interests change.

I categorize art walls into two categories.
Print Set Art walls - if you are a mom that needs to order, go with prints in picture frames.
Collage Art Walls - if you are okay with a little randomness, taping posters all over your wall is as popular as ever and loved by the new generations.

Picture walls are typically 2-16 pictures that are framed. Here are two I am loving for tween girls.

One element that makes the wall stand out is the pink paint that surrounds the frames. I love the white and gold frames with the bright art.

I love this wall for two reasons. If you have a wall that you plan to put nothing under, why not get the most use of the wall.

I also love the light wood frames. This colour of frame is one of my favourite. It works well with all paint colours.

Collage walls are typically 30-100+ pictures that are taped to the wall. Here are two I love for tween girls.

I love the mixing of vinyl and wall lights in this example.

I love the overlapping of the pictures making it look like wallpaper. Mix in a full length mirror and you have an easy focal point.

Tween Girl Room Makeover Art Wall Guide

Creating the wall might sound overwhelming but this is where I come in to help! It is my heart, my passion.

FIRST decide if you want to create a wall with picture frames or not.

FRAMES

1. Frame Style & colour - Take a look at my gallery wall Pinterest board. Look at the mixing of frames. Take note of frame styles and frame colours. Do you want all the same colour, style or do you want to mix? From years of doing gallery walls this is such a personal preference. I love telling people what to do, so if you are stuck at this step reach out!

2. Number of Frames - Decide how many frames you want to put up. Make sure to not put all small frames! You need a mixture of small, medium and large. I would 95% mix frame sizes for tween rooms if you are doing more than 3 picture frames.

3. Where to Purchase - Buy the frames next. I personally think it is easier to fill the frames you buy than buy frames to fit the art. Art is easy to adjust sizing and orientation.

  • IKEA would be the best place to purchase at a reasonable price.

  • I have also purchased from Walmart, Target and Michaels, with positive results.

  • Amazon has a great selection

4. Measuring - Measure the wall where you want the frames to start/end. Taking those measurements, make the space on the floor with painters tape. Lay out the frames and play away. Adult sized puzzle! Once you have the layout, take a picture for future reference.

5. Mock-up - Grab paper and draw up the layout and on each picture frame, write the size. Most picture frames have two sizing options. A size with the mat and a size without the mat. Go back to my gallery wall Pinterest board. Do you have a preference? I would suggest either all with no mat, or a mix. Don’t do all mats.

8. Now the fun part! Well I think it is the fun part. And if this is the hardest part for you, please reach out! I honestly would love to help you! Remember it is my passion. Take a look at this link. Scroll down and you will find all my art prints. I am always adding new and I can edit colours. If you have a quote you love, reach out and I will create it for you.

NO FRAMES

1. Start with the size! If you plan to add hanging them into a grid, I would do mostly one size, either 4x6 inches, or 5x7 inches, with a few 8x10 prints mixed in.

If you plan on overlapping, you can do a mixture of sizes. Keep in mind, the bigger the print the more space it will take up. So you will need less art prints to fill the space.

2. Picking the prints. Choosing a theme of pictures will help narrowing down your choices. Of course this is suppose to be a more random art wall but let’s not get too crazy! I would suggest starting with a theme to help narrow down the choices. Take a look at my Pinterest board for tweens. See what style your tween is loving. Here is a list of some trending styles.

Beach/summer. Rainbows. Moody, still fun, but darker tones. Animals. Sports. Girl Power. Friends and family - this one would be a mix of family and friends pictures printed with quotes mixed in.

Colour is also a theme. Pick one colour, two colours. Only black and white prints. All neutral colours.

3. Adding in extra wall decor. In one of the earlier pictures, I added in vinyl decals and LED lights.

I like what Pottery Barn Teen did in this picture. They added a mirror over top of the collage wall. It breaks up the collage and adds an extra element to the wall.

4. I have used a few different methods to attach prints to the walls. The best that works for my walls is double sided poster tape. I have smooth walls. High quality sticky tack works pretty good as well, don’t use anything from the Dollarstore.
