Modern Grid Gallery Wall
I’m a huge fan of using gallery walls to infuse personality and character into any home!
Welcome to my Gallery Wall Series, where I’ll guide you in choosing the perfect gallery wall style that suits both your space and your unique personality!
Modern grids are usually symmetrical, featuring a mix of a few different frame sizes. The key to a successful modern grid arrangement is maintaining a clean layout with straight, well-aligned edges.
Art Selection: Choose a single style of prints to create a cohesive look. Examples include family photos, landscapes, abstract paintings, or vintage designs.
Frames: For a cohesive look, use frames of the same colour, and style. Select only a few different sizes of frames. Select frames that enhance both the artwork’s colour palette and the room’s decor. The material also matters—metal frames add a sleek, modern touch, while wood frames bring warmth and timeless charm. If you're using the mats that come with the frames, keep it consistent—either use them for all frames or none at all.
Spacing: Leave an even amount of space between each frame, typically about two inches, to maintain a clean and orderly appearance.
I love the clean, polished look of this gallery wall style, yet surprisingly, I rarely design perfectly symmetrical layouts for my clients. In fact, after reviewing my portfolio, I found only two—and both date back to 2014!
In the first image above, my client wanted to showcase architectural travel photos, reflecting her clean and orderly style.
In the second image, my client, a busy mom of six, wanted matching sets of frames on either side of her fireplace. With the constant activity in her home, we chose this symmetrical style to bring balance amidst the ever-changing decor and abundance of toys in her living room.
In the third image, West Elm’s designers use a layout that isn’t perfectly symmetrical, yet it maintains a balanced, cohesive feel with matching frames, large mats, and aligned outer edges.
